Though they may be a far cry from the tough F-150 trucks favored by Texan cowboys, efficient hybrid and electric cars are growing ever more popular in the Houston area. Models like the 2017 Fusion Energi, with its 610-mile range, are ideal for long hauls across the Lone Star State.

As these battery-powered behemoths rise, drivers interested in them have noticed a new term: MPGe.

Both the 2017 Fusion Energi and the C-Max Energi boast up to 104 MPGe for city driving, but what does that really mean for those behind the wheel?

Electric energy is usually measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), but the average driver isn't very familiar with those units. Just like a gas-powered car requires a certain amount of energy in the form of gasoline to travel, so too does an electric car require a certain amount of energy from the battery. Some cars can drive 30 miles on one gallon of gas, while others may only get 20 miles per gallon. The Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi could drive 104 miles on the equivalent amount of energy found in one gallon of gasoline—only they are powered by electricity instead.

Also, they can only drive 21 miles on electricity, due to the size of their battery. Turns out there is a lot of energy in a single gallon of gasoline.
