How do I know if my tires are in good shape?
The first method is to just give them a quick once-over to look for damage or peculiar wear patterns.
Next, use the penny test to make sure your tires have adequate tread. Place a penny head-first into the tread. You shouldn't be able to see Lincoln's head. If you can, you likely need new tires.
My tires appear to be worn in strange places.
This could be the result of a few different maintenance issues:
- Tire rotation: Moving your tires around your vehicle helps to ensure even tread. Failing to do so can lead to some of your tires wearing down much faster than the others. You should get a tire rotation around the same time as an oil change.
- Wheel alignment: Driving over potholes and hitting curbs are major contributors to misaligned wheels, which can cause excessive tire wear. Getting a wheel alignment at least once a year helps to combat this problem.
- Tire pressure: Too much or too little air in your tires can really do a number on them. Make sure to check pressure levels monthly to avoid this.
